Paper 2
ENG 101
Rough Draft Due –
Paper Length – 2.5 pages
Write a paper analyzing the concept of progress in relation to digital technology (specifically smartphones and video games) and the Internet (specifically social networking sites). Your discussion should focus on at least TWO issues explored by Kenneth Goldsmith in “Let’s Get Lost” and Sherry Turkle in “Growing Up Tethered,” using their arguments to develop your own stance. Ensure that your argument remains the central focus of your paper.
In addition to these texts, incorporate and cite TWO external sources that provide further insight into the issues you examine. These sources should support your argument, whether you are in favor of or against digital technology in today’s world. You may use Jia Tolentino’s “The ‘I’ in the Internet” as one of your sources.
All external sources must come from credible publications (no blog posts). You must discuss your external resources with me before using them.
Your paper must follow the MLA checklist and Guidelines for Revising (Check Modules on BB).
Criteria for Evaluation:
1. Thesis Statement: Your paper must include a clear thesis that makes a strong, debatable claim.
2. Supporting Evidence: Provide an accurate summary of relevant material and skillfully integrate quotations into your writing. Use signal phrases (e.g., Goldsmith argues, “…”) and explain both the meaning and significance of each quotation in relation to your argument.
3. Source Requirements: A total of 4 sources. Goldsmith and Turkle will be two of your sources. You will find and cite 2 additional sources.
4. Objective Analysis: Avoid using personal or highly subjective examples. Instead, connect your argument to broader social contexts and discussions.
5. Use Third-Person Perspective: Do not use first-person ("I") or second person ("you") language. Maintain a formal third-person academic tone.
6. MLA Formatting & Citations: Your paper must include accurate MLA-style in-text citations and a properly formatted Works Cited page.
7. Formatting Requirements: Font: Times New Roman, Size 12; Double-spaced. In addition, follow all formatting guidelines provided in the syllabus. You may refer to a sample format for reference.
8. Proper Identification & Title: In the top left corner of the first page, include: Your Name, Instructor’s Name, Paper Number and Draft Type (Rough Draft, Final Draft, etc.), and Date. You only need 4 entries here. Provide an original title that reflects the central ideas of your paper.
9. Adherence to Guidelines: Failure to meet length and source requirements will result in an automatic failure of the assignment. Additionally, feedback will not be provided unless you attend office hours.
